Smart genie- Tata Sherwood group- Trupti

Session 2.

Today we explored expression using our faces and the whole body. We also tried making props to go along with a story. The kids made things like a person on a bridge, jewellery for the puppets, etc . it was great fun. We then played word antakshari as suggested by one of the kids.

After the break, we again took up puppet making, this time with a variety of material like bottle caps, thread, wool, straws, spoons, etc . one of the kids made a beautiful snow white puppet with ice cream sticks, straws and some felt cloth with which she made a beautiful gown for the character. Even the youngest of the group made a lion puppet who was eating five suns with a spoon. It was great fun for the kids and me alike.

SMART GENIE PROGRAMME AT SHERWOOD APTS

Today was the first day of this programme and I was all set yesterday by noon and had packed all the material required for today. But thing are not always so easy as they seem to be. I got to know yesterday that my group is no longer the one for which we had designed the activities and now I would have a group of kids between 4 – 9 yrs of age. Well, this was like a bomb exploding in my ear. This meant that I had to keep away all my things and prepare afresh. But using a bit of what I have learnt in TTT, I decided to stay calm and THINK of what I could do now. I also got in touch with someone who was designing for the other age group and talking to her reduced my anxiety to some extent. I then thought that since I had so little time, I would go ahead with two activities I was prepared for and all I now needed to do is to retune them to the age group. But to be very frank, I had butterflies in my stomach till I actually did the session.
As is the case with some 3-4 yr olds, one child did not want his mother to go away and started howling . But the moment his mother went away, he stopped crying and got interested in doing what the other children were doing. I was amazed by the creative talent the kids showed today. They were very eager to do the activity. All of us got so engrossed in the first activity that we even delayed the snacks break and that too lasted for just fifteen minutes.
After the break the kids got excited about making puppets for themselves. It was the first time some of the kids were making the puppets and I could see the apprehension all over their faces as to whether they would be able to make one. But I must say that the puppets which were made today were amazing. Even the four year olds made quite creative puppets and all of them were looking forward to showing them to their parents.
During reflection, most of the kids said they loved the puppet making the most and also enjoyed the shape object composition activity. They left the place with pride written all over their faces as they showed their puppets to their parents and with a promise to come back next Saturday.
