5th session - FernCity, Priyanka Aunty's session

Theme: Sensitivity towards body parts, Composition and creativivity.

We started with the energizers like: Jumping on one leg, closing eyes and walking on a line, pass the ball without using

hands, we put little more contraints and played few more games - which we all found more challenging.

Then stimulation for the activity began - Where they picked one playcard each, on which one body part was drawn.  Then we all

played one game - "oranges and lemons sold for a penny....... " and while we played we discussed each body part, its

function, how do we use it in doing different things, and about their cleanliness: for example bathing to keep body clean,

brushing to keep the teeth clean, etc.  Chidren not only shared the name of things but they shared the brands available in

market, and what they use.

After playing the game and sharing enough information on body-parts they had to hunt for pictures of various parts of body,

which were hidden in the room.  They were to put them together and make a complete picture out of it.  All of us enjoyed this

very much.  Then we decorated that frame with steamers and wool.

we took a snack-break here...  The exploration and learning didn't pause while eating also!

After snack-break we all wanted to share our thoughts, feelings, and some incidents that had happened last week.  While

sharing we identified feelings like happiness, sadness, anger, excitement, fear...  We decided to draw them on a page and

stick them on icecream sticks and make puppets out of them.  We used these to share our stories later, which we did in our

reflection round.  This activity was also liked by all of us as it was created by kids.

Now as the time was running out, and I had to start with the second half of the session, we collected some leaves and sticks.

We composed some picture out of them. Creativity started flowing - and kids have come with marvelous pictures:  rocket, sea

creatures, ganesha, hut in a dense jungle, and many more emerged...

In the end we had two rounds of reflection, where we shared and reflected on today's theme.

SESSION 5
Today’s session began with the kids themselves deciding to play a game. We had fun playing for some time and then we did meditation. The kids are enjoying the music and even singing along. Today too we went ahead with a small interview of the partner to find out the similarities and differences between self and the partner. The kids are getting used to asking questions. Then we did the sorting activity where they sorted the pictures into two rings, one to show things used by girls and the other showing things used by boys. Soon, they realized that there were things used by both. Then, we made kind of a venn diagram and put the things used by both girls and boys in the common area.
Then we had fun with finger prints using stamp pads and the kids loved it. They soon got into the comparing and contrasting their finger prints.
After the break, I read out two stories to them and then we compared and contrasted the two stories. The kids picked out smallest of similarities and differences. They drew whatever they remembered from the stories and put a lot of details into it. We also had some fun making some things like magic wands, fans, designs, etc with newspapers and they automatically compared and contrasted their things made from newspapers. During reflection, most of them said they liked the stories and “making melodies in my heart” which we did today.

SESSION 3
****************************

Today was "farm-animal" day. I welcomed them with welcome-cards.
Each welcome-card had only the body of a farm-animal but not the
face. Each genie picked the matching face from the basket, stuck
it on his/her welcome card and completed the picture. Then each
of them presented the sound of his/her farm-animal by singing a
part of "Old Macdonald" rhyme.

I told them the story of "5 Happy Cows" using finger puppets of
different farm-animals. After the story, I let them color
finger puppets.

Next activity was to assemble cow's face and make a mask.

Towards the end of the session, one genie expressed his eagerness
to share some stories. When I allowed him to do so, he bursted
into various stories and rhymes.

The last activity of the session was to make 'Page 1' of the
story book whose cover-page they had made in the previous session.
They made this page by choosing different pictures from the magazines,
cutting them and pasting them on a chart paper.

SESSION 2
****************************
Today's theme was "Picnic". We started with the game "Simon Says". We
sang picnic songs and rhymes. Then with the help of finger puppets I
told them a short story that involved a worm and picnic. In between the
story we paused several times for some interactive discussion such as
"What food to carry to the picnic ?", "What toys to bring along to the
picnic ?". Genies gave good response.

After the story-session, we did some activites. We prepared
sandwitches and lemon-juice. Then we enjoyed our preparation like we
were really at a picnic-spot.

After the snacks session, we made balls and frisbees with newspapers
and paper-plates. Genies also decorated trashcans with colourful
streamers.

In the end, I introduced them the concept of a story book. Genies made
cover-page for a story book.
I think the best thing all genies enjoyed was the lemon-juice that they
had prepared.

They made their own platforms to narrate their stories. Each one was ready with their own small story which they shared with the group and had lots of fun .By this time we all were very hungry so we took a small snack break.
Started with energizer which kids liked very much .
In the second session, kids enjoyed decorating ,colouring the face of the mask and created the body for that face  mask .

SMART GENIE SESSION--TATA SHERWOOD--Trupti

Session 4.

Today was our session on music. We played "freeze" with music and the kids loved it. They were almost shocked to see me dance. Then we had a small round of   "interviews" about what kind of a musical instrument the partner likes and which part of the body is used to play it. Then, we delved a bit into rhythm, tried to clap our hands to the rhythm of songs being played and so on.

Today I was again surprised to hear all kinds of creative responses from the kids. Also, midway through the session, a girl asked me when the next batch of geniekids would begin after this one gets over. I saw them enjoying the music, relaxing with it and also getting hyper with it. We had a good time today , more so as the tape recorder was working.

We also played the statue game where the kids sang songs and we had to freeze when it was over and whoever moved got a chance to sing next. I could see some of them deliberately moving so as to get a chance to sing.

We also made our own musical instruments with paper cups, beans, and paper and another one by stretching rubberbands on some boxes and junk toys. Kids loved the sound and said it sounded like the guitar.

Today I had carried material for an extra activity too, as I felt my group would be interested in making something apaprt from the music activity. So, we made bracelets   with shapes and the kids patiently took turns to use the punch. They wore their bracelets when they went home and even the boys were happy with the bracelets.

During reflection, most of them said they liked the musical instruments we made as well as the bracelets. They also remembered things from the previous session. One kid specifically told me he liked meditation because of the music.

One of the kids was wearing a shirt on which she had made a reindeer with hand and foot prints. All of them wanted to know if we could do something like that here too and even told me what all they would like to make, for e.g. an old man where they would have to use a dark coloured sheet and white paint, a santa, a flower, a butterfly and so on.

I am now thinking how to incorporate this demand in the coming sessions….

SMART GENIE Indra Nagar Group - Age 5- 9

SMART GENIE Indra Nagar Group - Age 5- 9

Hi,

My 4th session of smart genie went on well. I had a
bad time till 2.30 p.m. that day. Thanks to the genies
who made my latter part of the day joyful. Theme of my
session was compare and contrast. Genie were asked to
pair up and find out 5 things common in them and 5
things different in them. They came out with wonderful
answers. One of the differences from one pair was that
one genie wanted to have a son and the other a
daughter. The genies were asked to compare their own
fingers in both the hands. Gave them pictures from
magazines and asked them to compare and contrast. One
of the activity was two hoola hoops were placed on the
floor. Pictures of items used only by men, items used
only by women and items used by both were kept in a
basket. One hoola hoop was for kept to drop in items
used by men and the other for women. Genies were asked
to drop the items in the right place. Genies had no
problem in placing the items exclusively used by men
and exclusively used by women. Items used by both were
either in the basket or in their hands and wondering
where to place it. I told them that those items also
had to be placed inside the hoola hoop. They were
working on it for sometime and then two genies solved
it by overlapping the hoola hoop(like venn diagram)
and explained to the rest. This was then followed by
comparing and contrasting two stories. Two volunteers
came out with different stories and all the genies
partook in
comparing and contrasting.

Smart Genie FernCity Group KF

Group started with treasure-hunt taking a challenge to find out the theme of the day themselves.  They arranged the pictures and found out that they were going on a picnic!

Now the preparations began... What all we need to take on a picnic?

Children enjoyed making tri-color vegetable-sandwiches and lemonade.  They had second and third helpings of these.  Yummy and tasty!  Some kids exclaimed - "it's my best sandwich and lemonade!"

In the second half we played some picnic-games - like tail-the-donkey, Simon-says, firsbee, etc.  We collected some dry leaves and twigs and tried to make a picture out of them.  During this they saw a big chameleon and got very excited.

Smart Genie - Indira Nagar - Nehal - Session 1

*****************************
SESSION 1
*****************************

Today was my first day with this group. The activity was about helping chidren recognize various feelings
and expressions. We used kites of different sizes and shapes for this activity.
We also had various faces cut out from the paper. Each face expressed different feeling. Some faces
expressed happiness, some sadness, some anger, some smiling etc. Chidrens were asked to imagine
a situation "how will you react if your ice cream falls down ?".  One of the 'genie'
answered "Sad" and everyone repeated the same answer. Since it was our first day togteher I was
not sure whether children would converse more. So I stopped the question-answer activity here.
Next I asked them to pick any face and stick it on one side of the kite and colour the other side of the kite.
I asked them what feeling did their kites expressed. One of the 'genie' answered "Happy" and all of them
answered the same :-)

The second activity focused on the 'Strength'. During this activity everyone was supposed to introduce himself/herself
and tell one or two sentences about what they are good at. I started first - "I am genie Nehal. I am good in cooking and drawing".
All the 'genies' did the same one after the other. I learned that one of the 'genie' thought he was good at jumping,
other thought he was good at kicking. We do not judge our 'genies' or try to put words in their mouth. So
I accepted them as they introduced their strengths. Next. we used a butterfly and some objects to demonstrate
the 'Strength'. There was one paper-butterfly, a pair of paper-wings and 4 paper-objects for each of the 'genie' in our group.
(Those 4 paper-objects were clock, wheels, bag, sun-glass). Each 'genie' made a complete butterfly for him/herself by sticking
butterfly body, wings and objects on the ice-cream sticks.

Then I started by asking them some questions about themseleves which would help them further understand the excercise.
The questions I asked were like - How did they arrive at Geniekids today, Who dropped them to Geniekids etc.
Then some questions related to the excercise - "If you wish to reach some place on time which of these objects would you
you use ?". Some 'genies' answered clock, some answered wheels for the cycle. Next I asked "Your butterfly is going
out in the sun to gather some honey. How would it protect itself from the sun ? One 'genie' answered sun-glasses.
This excercise was a realization for me that these 'genies' are only small by age, but not by their mind. I would
not have learned this without this group of 'genies'.

In today's session, one 'genie' was missing her mom and did not want to join our activities. But during
the snack-break something made her come to the classroom and then she too enjoyed the activities.

At the end of the session, all 'genies' flew back home with butterfly and kites.

Smart Genie--Sherwood Group--Trupti

Session 3.

Today's session began with the treasure hunt for pictures hidden in the room. All the kids were very exited to find the pictures and they enjoyed the hunt even more because of the "hot- cold" clues. When they were near a picture I said hot, hot and when they went away from it, I said cold, cold. Soon they picked it up and we had fun with the treasure hunt. Then they were asked to say what all the pictures reminded them of and all of them immediately said "birthday".

Today the kids were given a small experience in interviewing the partner about how they celebrate their birthday and they enjoyed that too. Even the smallest kids came out with responses like we need to have invitation cards, balloons, caps, return gifts, food, juice  etc. then, they drew, wrote about what all goes into planning a party. then we made invitation cards and they all said they would make invitation cards for their friends for their next birthday party.

After the break we played a small game. They picked up chits and after reading out what was written on it, they had to sing the birthday song as that animal or person would. All of them mooed, roared, quacked, and oinked the birthday song and the room was filled with laughter. We also explored non verbal expression for a while.

During the break, Shipra dropped in and looking at the kids and I having snacks, exclaimed, " wow, look at them having their snacks so nicely". She looked almost surprised to see the kids neatly eating their snacks and all of us chatting as we did so.

After the break, we made really beautiful party caps with glitter stuck on it. Some kids even told me the procedure I must have followed to make the glitter from wrapping paper. They were exited to use the punch and the stapler too. In the reflection, all of them remembered all that we did today and promised they would make the caps at home too. They left the place wearing their caps and exitedly told their parents how they had made them with great pride. Today we really had a ball I must say!
