Sandhya Aunty, Cute Cubs, 28th July 07, Problem Solving!

Today we could not do some activities as we were caught up in issues like how do we decide who goes first? Who will be the denner? Whoever gets the majority vote gets to go first was one of the opinions. Even then we were stuck with 2 having same number of support, which led to negotiations and "please let me go" etc etc. With lots of patience on part of the other children the issue got resolved. Going out for snacks in a train also involved lots of "I, I, I, I want to be the engine…." Was resolved by the children and it was decided that whoever finishes the snacks first gets to be the engine on the way back to the class……finally when we wanted to go out we found the door was stuck and we all tried various ways to open it still did'nt open. We finally decided to bang on the door and shout which got us outside help to open the door…..Talk about TEAMWORK…..it was all there today…….Finally we planted our Magix plant with "HELPING" leaves….

Sandhya Aunty, Cute Cubs, 21st July 07, Why Teams???

Children don't need to know the exact spellings to spot the word. This was very apparent today, while connecting a few habits of mind to some animals through stories. I wrote those qualities on card sheets and put them around in the class and children had no problem spotting each and every quality as we discovered them in the stories. Animal rescue game was also played with great enthusiasm and on counting the number of animals rescued the children said they were able to rescue more animals in teams of two and all the animals, when the whole class went as one team, within the given time limit.

Today's session started with exploring musical instrument. Genies were so excited to see how can play this instrument? They explore instrument for some time.
Then we discussed about which all parts of the body we use to play musical instrument and with which all parts of the body we can make beats?
After break we made rattle. Genies use two paper cups to make rattle. And we put beans in between two cups. .   making beats. Then Genies decorated it with streamers. There is big discussion for who is going to take which color in streamers? At last all Genies decorate it with different color and made different beats through rattle. And enjoyed whole

komala Aunty 8 to 13 yrs 28 July SUCCESS???

The session was about bringing in the leadership qualities . To consciously
use those qualities. The session took off with the children wanting to play
the game with the ball. Their challenge was to convince each and every one
in the team to play the same game as one team. There was lot of group
dynamics and children expressing their frustration, their concern over not
able to decide something before the time runs out, accepting something,
convincing everyone to play the game they want to play ....was very intense.
Had discussions over it and children did express themselves as to how it was
hard to convince everyone for their game , non co-operation among the team .
Later they had to do an activity again with everyone as one team sharing a
common goal. The session was all about that. How do we convince people,
motivate them , encourage them, work to-gether, work with others without
put downs , feel good about ourselves ......finally isn't being successful
all about this ?

VIDYA AUNTY - 3&4 YEARS - 28TH JUL -MUSIC MAGIC

Today was a potpourri of all things music which meant patterns created out of actions and noise, playing with musical instruments, making their own out of clay, giving it a name, drawing musical instruments out of charts etc.  While this was the main activity, to instill team work (lets all play a single tune, form a single pattern etc)…the underlying concept that emerged and stuck was "responsibility."  Children not only remembered the word taught last week, but began using it frequently.  While tracing out musical instrument drawings, I saw them caring and sharing and solving problems of "not enough space" by patiently waiting for their turn, helping those taking time to hurry up and telling others "nicely" to do their stuff.  Our que systems at banks, traffic etc could learn a lesson or two from today's classJ

Nehal Auntie - 3 and 4 yrs - 21 July 2007 - “Yeh dosti hum nahi todenge” !

Today's session started with an unusual introduction round, in which besides their own names, Genies were asked to mention one of their friend's name as well. Then we discussed what all activities we can do with our friends? Genies response was that they play, they share toys etc.

One Genie expressed his concern that sharing certain toys can result in loosing them.               In response to that I narrated a story "Three fish friends". In between the story we stopped at times for little interactions, during which Genies shared their own thoughts about the story.

After the break, Genies prepared fruit salad. The idea behind this activity was to convey the message that although we might be different; from different parts of India and speak different languages; we can mingle, unite and co-operate towards a common goal.

After this activity Genies were very happy. As a reflection, when asked about identifying their favorite activity done today, response from all of them was same "Fruit Salad"!!
Genie seemed very proud.

Session ended with a fruit salad song, which all Genies sang together.

Nehal Auntie - 3 and 4 yrs – 14 July 2007 – Care Fair

Today's session started with discussion of different ways of caring for family and friends. Most Genies were of opinion that we can show care by means of help and that the way to communicate special messages is by means of greetings cards.

Then I announced that we are going to make some greetings card for our friends and family.  Each Genie made a nice card using chart paper. Genies seemed very happy and proud of it.

After the break we sang a rhyme, "I love you, you love me", which has message of love and care. Then we made a collage of pictures that were cut from news paper and magazine.

That was the end of the Session.

Nehal

Nehal Auntie - 7 and 8 yrs – 7 July 2007 – Is ice-cream really ‘Natural’?

Today I took Mini's session. The session's theme was "Natural or man-made?". The session started with a game where in Genies made one single tower using building-blocks. This was just warm-up for the activities that were to follow.

In the stimulation round, we played a game "Fire in the mountain". In this game they were stimulated by questions such as "Can anyone make the sun?"

After the break, we played a game where in we passed around a dice with pictures of natural and artificial things on its sides and let Genies distinguish between the two. Similarly, in the next game we passed around a book with natural and artificial pictures, and let Genies distinguish between the two.

In the last activity, Genies were given option to either (a) choose and cut pictures of natural and artificial things from news-papers/magazines – and make a collage (b) draw pictures of natural/artificial things from their imagination.

That was the end of the day.
