Vidya Aunty 3&4 years, 29th sept - choo choo and chicks

After what seems like ages, I experimented with food as a medium and no, not to eat, but what else can we do with veggies.  We made potato chicks and bitter gourd crocodiles and the theme was in tune with the story kind choo choo published by our very own geniekids team.  One of the better sessions in a nutshell.

22nd September 2007, Kittens 5 to 6 yrs, Picnic fun

We started off by painting our papier-mâché cups. Then we went on a picnic and had cucumber salad and lemonade. It was great watching children pealing and cutting the cucumber. All of them were doing it for the first time. Parents have faith and let them peel, cut, they enjoy it sooooo much. Children made their lemonade decided how much sugar to put kept mixing it and finished the whole lot. I missed my cup of lemonade!! Then when I asked them about what to do with the garbage, the responses were, let's leave it and go, take it with us, one child actually started to put the peels into his pocket, then another child noticed the cover in which we took the cucumbers and decided to carry the peels back in them. Lastly we had a great time doing the rain cycle. At one time I was the only drop of water up in the clouds and all the kids kept blowing me all over the place……..

komala aunty - 8 to 13 yrs - Sept 22 - Story telling

The session shot off with playing a game of asking questions . Later I told them a story and talked about the structure of the story as to what are the components it has. later they were given a story and were asked to analyse the different components to the story.  The children liked doing this with their team members. later they were asked to end one story , find the solution to the story .  They also wrote their own story when i gave them the place where the story happens. Children were reluctant to work  in the team of people which I had formed . later discussed as to how did they work in the team and how did they feel when the goal was reached. children were very candid in their expressions  .

komala aunty - 8 to 13 yrs - Sept 8 - Drama

Today the children put up a show on nature versus man. One thing which I observered today was the team being building up in the group.  Together they could put up a show after lot of compromises , differences , interests . At the end of the show everybody felt better and confident  that they could pull up the show.  Looking for more activity in the group as a whole....

8th September 2007, cute cubs 5 and 6yrs old, Use and re-use..

Carrying forward to telling stories we tried making a story by adding a sentence of our own to the sentence made by the previous child. It took a while for the children to get the hang of it. Then we observed man-made things and things found in nature within our class. Children came up with many interesting observations like water, air and people/children are from nature, while paper, fan etc were made by man using things from nature. Then we observed things that were re-used in the class, one child observed that we could draw on the other side of the paper also…Then we re-used the newspaper to make small papier-mâché cups….

Geetha aunty - 7 & 8 yrs - 8th sep- Magic machine.

Today's session was on awareness about recycling and reusing. We played a game on sorting out the garbage as a team.Later children were asked to create a new machine with clay that would help us in keeping our city clean. Vow ! What an amazing creativity they have! they created new machines like a Robot which would take in all the waste things and change them into useful objects, A special garbage bin which would take in as much as endless wastes, another machine like a dragon eats up the waste and turn them into manure which is good for soil, another machine that has two compartments, one into which garbage is fed and from the other compartment useful materials come out.Few kids made things which fascinated them very much but beautifully connected them with cleaning up the city. like one kid made a dinosaur  whose food is garbage and the other kid made a spider who will clean up the whole citty by spinning it's web. I was stunned by their wonderful creations.

Vidya aunty 3 & 4 years, Sept 8th - Attitude of Gratitude

Every session has something to teach me – big or small and this session was no different.  It was on gratitude and it was great fun to find out what to be thankful for even from waste paper to empty soap boxes to nature to people in our lives.  What was more appealing today for my was the playtime in the sand area – I saw teamwork, prejudices forgotten, creativity, bonding, and just to have simple plain fun!!! It was therapeutic just to watch the dewdrops team passively.  Planning for more such "exploring time."

Geetha aunty - 7 & 8 yrs - 1 st sep -Draw your story

we started the session with a game on co-operation. Children were divided into two groups and were asked to make the longest news paper chain. Kids of one team started making individual chains faster and did not have time to join them. If they had joined,  their chain would be the longer one.The other team worked beautifully where one child was stapling the links while others made the links and contributed to their success. we discussed about the game and the importance of co-operation.
our main activity was drawing the interactive story with the theme on  Nature and man which was a stimulating activity for the project on environment. The story made them to think and guess the origin of the things around them.discussion of the story will be continued next week.

Vidya Aunty - 3 & 4 years, Natural vs Manmade

Concept on what is natural and manmade and what is natural about you – based on the story of the red daffodil.

I did wonder at the beginning of the session whether the kids would really understand let alone distinguish between natural and manmade things.  They did, in more ways than one when they spotted that my lips were not of a natural color because of the lipstick I had worn – quite, quite observant I must say and not to mention how well they connected with the concept.  Its moments like these that I live for in the classroom!!!

1st September 2007, Cute Cubs 5 and 6 yrs, Music and Nature

We explored musical instruments. We created patterns then made pictures of things found in nature using those patterns. We talked about how people communicated long long ago when language was not developed. Then we used the musical instruments to communicate. We expressed happiness, sadness and anger using instruments which I enjoyed very much. We made codes and played a kind of dumb charades guessing each others message. We also enjoyed a dumb charades on things found in nature. Kids really enjoyed enacting things found in nature…
