Vidya aunty 3 and 4 years - Values - Feb 23rd.

The last day saw a culmination of all values that we hold dear from a book of values. The book has symbols attached to the values and children were asked to choose a value, why they liked it, and attach their own symbol to it and make a card. Most preferred the easy way out of tracing it from the book but colored and added their own stuff later.

One child didn't feel like doing the activity. ( I didn't have any background as to why ? for she was from a different group) I asked her " what she wanted to do" she said I wanted to read. I said ok. She went on reading books for quite sometime when everyone was working on the activities. I interrupted her couple of times to ask if she was ready to do the activity. After some time I saw her doing her activity. Asked her how she felt now? She said " I feel good" I could see that on her face.

24 Nov -"What makes me happy?"
Kids were very eager to tell as well to draw about
their feelings. There were many things which they
shared and made me think that they don't need big
gifts or presents. Only thing they need is love care
and quality of time we share with them.

1 Dec -"Care"
We got many toys from our activity room,played ,messed
up and had lots of fun. Initially kids packed up
everything messily then the thought came of care and
respect With lots of stimulation through books they
got the idea of care and respect.Kids made care card
for whom they care most mainly for their parents.

8 Dec "Responsibilometer"
By making responsibilometer to check where we stand
kids had lots oh fun and felt proud of themselves
being responsible. End of the session I could really
see the responsible genies. We made star batches in
respect of that.

15 Dec-"Whom do I respect?"
Through story kids got little idea about respect. But
they showed respect only towards their family and made
puppet of their parents whom they respect .Need to
work more in respect of surrounding..

22 Dec "Teamwork"
Today the whole session was very energetic for kids as
well for me.
We played lots of team games like rope pulling,
balancing balls, collecting balls in a team etc. Kids
got the idea of team work and what will happen if they
don't co-operate.

5 Jan "Friendship"
We had fun while discussing about friends .
Most of kids telling about person who was
sitting next to them. But once they got
stimulated they started thinking beyond the classroom.
They enjoyed making friendship band but none of them
wanted to give to friend. They kept bands for
themselves.

12 Jan " Am i listening carefully?"
We started the session with game which says you have
to listen carefully and act as per instruction.I was
patting my knee and told them to clap.They all said
clap and were patting their knees.As we played more
they got the idea and started listening carefully.They
shared lots of thoughts for what will happen if we
don't listen. Finally we explored musical instruments
and made our own instrument.

19 Jan "Perseverance"
A complete session of Perseverance with lots of
action.
We started with a "Fox and grapes" story. I stopped
the story in between where the fox finds grapes .I had
tied a bunch of grapes on some height. Kids were very
eager to catch them. They started jumping or acted
like a fox to catch it but couldn't. As they said we
can not I asked them you really don't want to eat.
Then they stared thinking different ways to catch.
Here i introduced the concept of perseverance to get
the grapes. Kids explored whole lot of things to reach
at grapes. They brought bathroom stool, mats on stool
,paper stones, broom, made noise to shake grapes,
went down to bring tyre from sandpit .Finally with
many efforts they were able to catch the grapes.

2 Feb "Who Am I?"
We played a game where kids had to balance the apple
basket on their head and walk.
Before playing the game most of kids were
overconfident about doing the task, but actually when
they played they couldn't. Then were all ready to
practice and practice made them perfect and confident.

9Feb "What if I plan"
We planned many things such as birthday party ,
picnic, Stage show.Initially kids performed stage show
without any planning where no one was able to do
anything,
But as they tried they found the importance of
planning and performed again.This time they did their
best. I enjoyed as they were doing some part and
figuring out what planning part is missing and
discussing again and again.

16 Feb "Emotions and Feelings"
what different emotions we have? We made list of
emotions with drawing and playing game. Step towards
our emotions and feelings!

we were trying to make paper house as a team ,but I
was only person who was trying to make a house,so we
changed the activity and made small individual paper
houses. Kids enjoyed making paper cut patterns.

Kings and Kingdoms were the theme and a lot of decision making and confidence aspect was stressed upon. We made clay kinds and queens and spoke about what we are going to do if we had to rule our own kingdoms. Did distinguish between fairy tale kings and the real ones and told them stories of Akbar and Birbal. Quite an enjoyable session more in terms of exposure. This will be carried forward to the next session.

Children were becoming interviewers, reporters today. They were to go around geniekids to video shoot in teams. One team had everything under control. It was interesting to see the children doing their rehearsals , planning their questions to ask, taking turns to shoot . During circle time children expressed how did they feel doing the shoot and what way they co-ordinated their work and what didn't work .

children came to to do something craft /creative. Asked them why do you want to do that ? As to if I cook, it is because i want somebody to eat the food, so if they make something what will they do with that ? what is their goal ? some said just like that, some said I like that, some said no i don't want to do that, some said we don't want to do for we are not good at crafts and creativity. now that had to be explored. asked as to what is creativity? is only arts and crafts creative? when do we say you were creative ? started to explore creativity.

Played a emotional board game with different situations , asked as to how would they react or feel in such situations. many children were shocked or didn't want to talk about it saying aunty i don't feel any thing . Like what do you do when you are scared, some children said I don't get sacred et all ! I had a feeling that children were never made to touch base with their feelings.

Session started off with discussion on what I want to do rather what is the activity for the day aunty? Discussed as to what would I like to do when I come to success saturday classes every saturday . what can i do which i like to do and explore more about the same and how would i do. This created a commotion in the class as some children liked the idea and some children were confused. some even asked as to what do I do now aunty immediately ? They really were lost . Thats when I understood that some children need some kind of structure for their choice also. They needed somebody to tell them the process as to how and what do they need to do exactly. One child was almost in tears when i told him that you can do what ever you want , read, think, research on something , explore something . As a facilitator I learnt that you need to give structure for everything for some children . Some children need their space when working and some children need somebody to work with. They rely on somebody else's thoughts for their operation and how some children steal the entire show. As a facilitator, it gave me a whole new perspective on the needs of the children and their way of operation .

I am surprised that a more complicated a concept seems, the faster these kids are able to grasp them. Theme was measurements last week it was on the basics of measurements, this week, we took it one step further on measuring to improve and decided to make a "Mood Calendar" to measure our moods. They decorated a calendar and associated colors for different moods to measure over the week.

Today we spoke a lot about friendships and who we respect and what they mean to us. We charted out a respect and care jar and put in all who mean a lot to us. They were also told to think and add all that they respect which does not include people. Overall an interesting "thinking" session.

Combined classes are always fun and bring about fresh perspectives and today was one of them. HOM was responsibility and kids had to make a "responsibilityometer" and put in starts in the various levels of responsibilities displayed which they enjoyed making. From the way they response, it seems like the concept and the usage of the word responsibility was grasped quite well, though most kids were already responsible without them being aware of it:)

One of the days where it was packed with activity. Care and respect was the theme for the day and the story of care and respect was well received. Second half the children made gifts out of clay to those who they care the most and one sample went to the creative corner we are working on.

we did paper mache. most of them said it was yuk. some of them didn't even want to do it. i said those who want can and others can watch. saying this i began doing and it was amazing to see how one by one everyone got into the groove.

One of my better sessions and the first step towards making posters for the creative corner. The quiltmaker's gift story was well received, but the highlight was the bonding that happened between the children of two classes. They really ddi seem to bring out the best in each other!!

This session was all about team work.we started
session with a team game.I gave some flower rings to
both team to make a single tower where each player has
to contribute.but instead of single tower there were
many small buildings ,"my building".But when they
started working in team it was really fun for them,and
in the end they were really happy to see big
tower,"our tower".
As a team work they made wall paper,which again was
fun for them to work on such a big paper.here they
were more eager on painting rather then working in a
team.Anyways whatever team work they did they had fun.

6th October 2007, 5-6 yrs, clean water

We started by writing down our own class codes and agreed to follow them. Then I told them a story of a village with a pond as the only source of water. The children were the villagers with various occupations and found that they had to go to the pond for water and at the end of the story the pond was very dirty and smelly. Then children tried to clean the pond using filter, cotton, cloth etc but could not clean it. Then they read in the book how water is cleaned and supplied to our houses. They were happy to do their journals after a long time.

Finally a direction towards the project creating the best out of waste!! We made an attempt to make gift wrappers out of recycled paper and junk material and vegetable prints. The activity digressed and we ended up exploring music and tunes instead for most part of the session!! That's creativity for you!

29th September, 5-6 yrs, Clean Water

We started with rain cycle and talked about where all the rain water goes. Then in three teams of three they created scenes around a water body like lake, river and ocean. When they were ready Zeto visited them from a far away planet. He asked for clean drinking water to refill his tanks. The children found that the lakes, rivers and oceans did not have clean water, then they went down to the kitchen and fetched all the drinking water that they could find but it was not enough to fill Zeto's spaceship. Then they found out that the only clean water available was in Antartica and the clean water supplied to their homes require big machines to clean the water and to fill Zeto's spaceship huge machines consuming lots of electricity would be required. Then they came up with their own ways to keep water clean like, save drinking water, don't put garbage in the river, lake etc….

Today's session started with a discussion on what could they do on the garbage issue to bring about a change. Children got really heated up on the issue and came out with suggestions like making posters, puppet show, street plays,cassetes and cds. they then freezed on two things which would be really possible in a short span of time. kids were making up a story for the puppet show on awareness on garbage management.
