Designing Expresso

PDF version

The session started with joining the corners of a page - and we realised while the material was same, the instructions were same - how the output were completely diverse - that is the essence of an Expresso.

The we went through the following steps

Step - 1 What all do we like to express?

  1. imagination / fantasy
  2. ideas
  3. emotions
  4. experience, incidents, situations
  5. values
  6. expectations / intentions
  7. views / opinions / perceptions
  8. understanding / learn
  9. abilities / skills / strengths

Choose 1 or 2 of above and think of ideas

When all do we like to express?
  1. interesting
  2. needed / want
  3. explore
  4. stimulated
  5. just like that

Add one or two of these into the idea

How all do we like to express? - add all

  1. speaking (see 250 ways of verbal expression)
  2. body
  3. writing
  4. drawing
  5. art mediums like colour, clay, collage etc

Add few of these into the idea

What all roles of others i want in my expression?

  1. listen
  2. respond / react /
  3. empathise
  4. understand
  5. think
  6. evaluation / approval / appreciate
  7. question
  8. participate - team
  9. value add
  10. explore
  11. connect

Finally add any one of the above to add peer interaction

Now finalise and make the design fair.

Expresso based on books

Submitted by ratnesh on Fri, 27 Feb 2009.

Continuing on using books as raw material for expresso - here are six categories of expresso you can explore. pl realize that each category will further have multiple kinds of expresso:

1. Expresso based on the theme of the book (say friendship or boats or trees)
2. Expresso based on the characters of the book (say pooh or aeroplane or a king)
3. Expresso based on the events, situations or information given in the book (say friendship or boats or trees)
4. Expresso based on the language style - words, sentences, etc in the book (say friendship or boats or trees)
5. Expresso based on the visuals in  the book (most visuals have a lot of details and these can be easily used)
6. Expresso based on listening to the story (preferably record the story as audio) - this obviously is better that it is based on an actual book (or existing set of visuals) - which the children can refer to later.

Major reason for using books as basis for expresso is that it encourages a lot of reading. Also this reading is more associative :-)
A minor reason is that we have soooo many different kinds of books in our library - let use them.
Also if children choose the book - there is an immediate ownership of the expresso itself.

Please also use computers - sporadically - in conjunction with books
A simple way would be to click all the pages of the book and put them as one slide each in powerpoint.
You can even erase text from all the photogrpahs (using coreldraw) and then use that creatively.
You can even record the audio.
lots of possibilities!!
