READING TIME

PDF version

Why "reading time"?

To explore, experience, experiment  language through books in different ways

What is reading time?

Reading time - We see, talk, imagine, relate, compare pictures, words, sentence, story. We make new story  around existing story, relate things with our life, ourselves, things around us etc.We do drama around the story narrated in the book. We make the songs, create a rhythm, rhyme word around the book story. We  spend time with book by being with self or with partner.

These all happens with respect to the theme of the week.

Like a "A lot happens over the book on reading time"

How does it happens?

  • We do it after sunshine time.
  • Children settle with group.
  • It happens in three parts.
    • Faculty reading -  Faculty reads one big book which has visuals along with words  .
  • Faculty holds the book facing towards children, use a finger/ ice cream stick  as pointer to point the written context of the book.
  • Self reading - Children takes the book, read/see/sing/make story etc it by self,
  • Peer to peer reading - Children sit in group and read book to each other, they use an ice cream stick to point to the context of the book, they make the story, sings, compare the things etc
  • All these things happens according to the theme of the week/day.

What all happens during  book reading?

    • Children talk about pictures, their characteristics, its color, shape, pattern on it, compare the size of the picture, count it. Look at the numbers of the page.
    • Relate the picture to the songs, sing the songs. For e.g. fruit picture - sing fruit salad song, rabbit- little peter rabbit…
    •  Child create a story with connecting picture to each other.
    • They connect their favorite characters to the story for. e. g Story start with Chota bheem further connecting to the picture.
    • They do  role play  of  character in the book.
  • Children relate the sounds of the word.for e.g /b/ - ball.
  • Bigger group children reads books to the whole group.
  • Reading time is  like a - café coffee day  where faculty serve the menu card to them  and child choose the cup of his choice.

Anjali
