Frameworks of Learning
Here are the basic frameworks we use to understand learning and offer it to children:
- Multiple Intelligence - Many ways of being intelligent - it is not how much I am intelligent but How I am intelligent - read more about Multiple intelligence at http://www.geniekids.com/workshops/multiple-intelligence
- Learning Style - We learn best when we learn through our own learning style - Kinesthetic-Visual or auditory.
- Integrated Learning - My life is not compartmentalized in Maths, history or geography - Life is integrated for me so the learning is. When I learn I do not learn subject wise rather subjects flow into learning. For example when I am Exploring WATER i will do survey and find how much water is used - I will do calculations, graph, analyse. I will trace the journey of water from the source and explore which all state it flows from? I learn geography. I also find how the water has changed life of people by talking to them or researching - I learn social science.
- Questioning is Thinking - In how many ways you can shift a bucket of water from here to there? What all you can do If you have only 15 litres of of water for next three days?
When I am being questioned to think, I think - when I am questioned to give right answer, I am stressed. I stop learning as soon as I give ONE right answer which satisfies the adults but may not add to my learning. - Thinking is Learning - When I am thinking I am learning. When I think HOW, IN what all ways, how differently - I learn. I may be thinking wrong, but I am thinking.
Doing leads to involved and experiential learning.
Continuous efforts, not strength or intelligence, is the key to unlocking potential.
Education is not about feeding consumers but about creating producers. Production of any kind requires complex and higher order thinking skills at multiple levels resulting into a 'mentally wealthy' child. Lets understand that enterprise is the biggest learning, that effort is the best result, that doing is most fun and that earn is part of learn’.
Let the child use the most essential secret of success - ACTION:
- Let child not just eat – but cook simple foods.
- Let child not just listen – but tell stories, news or opinions.
- Let child not just read – but write her views, feelings or reviews to the editor.
- Let child not just laugh – but make other laugh by telling jokes, showing antics, modulating voice or dramatising.
- Let child not just play – but invent new games, new rules etc. Let your child not just be entertained – but also entertain with shows or art.
- Let child not just ask for self – but also give (service).
- Let child not just buy – but earn.
Herbert Spencer

How children learn
"how children learn" and not necessarily one way.
The responsibility for learning
Furthermore, it is argued that the responsibility of learning should reside increasingly with the learner (Von Glasersfeld 1989). Social constructivism thus emphasizes the importance of the learner being actively involved in the learning process, unlike previous educational viewpoints where the responsibility rested with the instructor to teach and where the learner played a passive, receptive role. Von Glasersfeld (1989) emphasizes that learners construct their own understanding and that they do not simply mirror and reflect what they read. Learners look for meaning and will try to find regularity and order in the events of the world even in the absence of full or complete information.
