Course on Multiple Intelligence
Multiple Intelligence for Active Learning
For teachers to
- get children to discover magic inside themselves
- put magic in your teaching and learning
through experiencing, exploring and learning via eight intelligences

The Old fashioned way of teaching was
- Teach the way I teach
- Only one way to teach
- If learning is boring – so what? you have to learn
- If learning is difficult – so what? Put more effort
But Multiple Intelligence (MI) has made it simple and practical to change the way we look at learning. In MI way we
- Teach the way child learns
- Many ways to teach / learn
- If learning is boring – we’ll make it exciting
- If learning is difficult – we’ll make it easy to digest
In the MI way We make the difference to the child
and The child makes the difference to learning
An Example of how a child's learning becomes exciting with Multiple Intelligence. Lets say we want to learn about Trees.
Take your class each day out to see a tree using one way of 'seeing' each day. Tell them it will be as if they are using special glasses (a frame of reference) to see:
* Day 1. Look at the tree as an painter.
Painters would look for lines, shapes, colours and patterns. Back in class develop your impressions.
* Day 2. Look at the tree as a poet.
Look for adjectives, phrases and metaphors that capture the tree. How does the tree make you feel? Back in class write out some small poems.
* Day 3. Look at the tree as a scientist.
Scientists would ask what sort of tree, why does it have bark, buds, leaves etc? Back at class prepare a question bank on trees.
* Day 4. Look at the tree as mathematician.
Mathematicians would want to know how high, how wide the tree is, the average size of leaves etc? Back in class make a dimension chart.
* Day 5. Look at the tree as a Politician.
Politicians would see its social importance, its role in people's life, livelihood and what all socio-economic purposes it can serve? Back in class make a poster to propagate amongst masses the reason why we should save / plant more trees.
* Day 6. Look at the tree as a Dancer / Musician
Artists would see its physical form and various elements, its movements, its sounds, the kind of feelings it evokes, etc? Back in class create a small dance - drama called 'Our Tree'.
The Benefits to the child when working with MI as the frame work
- Each child feels connected, accepted, leading to high self esteem
- Learning meaningful to each child
- Learning active – children drive learning
- More interesting homework or assessment tests –higher motivation
And the Benefits to you, the teacher, when working with MI as the frame work

Finally a quote from Thomas Armstrong
"My work as an educator and psychologist in the fields of multiple intelligences, ..... has been guided by a belief that all children are gifted children. Each child comes into the world with unique potentials that, if properly nourished, can contribute to the betterment of our world. The biggest challenge for parents and teachers is to remove the roadblocks that keep those gifts from being recognized, celebrated, and nurtured."
