Pains of learning

Submitted by mina on Tue, 19/08/2008 - 21:33.

Sometimes, the funwork that we do doesnt seem to be fun. It is such an excercise in frustration - for my child since she is trying something new and for me in the feeling of helplessness it creates.

For eg. If we are to draw a flag, child is not ready to accept that her flag is not as "perfect" as mine. No amount of talking helps at this point. So the papers are torn, things spilt in frustration that it is not in line with her expectation... I am forced to stop the funwork (since I get uncomfortable in breaking the things / tearing the paper) and I say - we will start when you are ready, you dont seem to be OK right now. And that sets up a further turmoil...

After sometime, she settles down and starts again, and then god help us if something goes wrong again...

I really appreciate the way she keeps trying and trying and trying though.. I really understand her frustrations... But I have no clue how to guide her.

26 th July-Fun Tracing

Submitted by geetha on Mon, 28/07/2008 - 12:01.

We are slowly settling by knowing and following the codes of being gentle to others. Two kids started fighting and they became friends by shaking hands.Kids traced their hands and feet and liked painting with their hands.Few kids were restless and so we made puppets by stuffing the socks with bits of news papers and that made them relax themselves and they talked about their puppets. This activity truly shifted the mood of the kids from a tensed to a soothing one.

who is co-operating?

Submitted by komala on Sat, 26/07/2008 - 19:33.

Objective was co-operation and team work. Some children were naturals and some needed to make an effort to work as a team. It was really HARD for them ! Later in the day when asked to go around and find things and people who you see as working together/co-operating with each other, the children went all around and started observing everything very closely. Came up with huge lists of things in nature, and everywhere which they said were co-operating. Was amazing to see their lists starting with pencils with erasers, books with stands, grills with boards, our body with us ?

Twin role of facilitating

Submitted by geetha on Sun, 20/07/2008 - 14:56.

Facilitating the kittens, has a double role one a responsible, alert person to handle any situation. The second role would be like a viewer of funny kids video with a difference that I can only watch and laugh later after the sessions.
Today one genie went to the wash room to wash his hands and within seconds pulled out the whole tissue roll and looked at me with an expression which is not found on our feelings chart.

Did You say working with others ?

Submitted by komala on Sat, 19/07/2008 - 21:55.

Teams. working in teams was the objective. How do I work in a team? It was interesting to see that one child even though he was working in a team was focusing on how to get his team member out! It was also interesting to see some children coming up with strategies while playing ball game to win the game.
