Story Doing

PDF version

The concept of Story Doing is somewhat unique to Geniekids.

The concept is very simple- story is not a passive activity - it is something in which "me" is totally involved - physically, mentally and emotionally. The more i am involved - the more fun and more i learn.

So here is a story about story doing :-) (thanks to subha of 13ttt for this story)

There was a lady who had two children. Everyday they would ask her for stories before they slept. This lady would just read from a story book and that was it. The children became bored after sometime and wanted her to tell something new. She did not know what to do and one night she sat with a piece of paper and in frustration kept twisting it. Her children were curious as to what she was doing and sat next to her trying to figure it out and one of the children commented that it looked like a frog and the other one said it was a frog which had lost its one leg in an accident and was crying..boo..hoo...hoo and then the story started from there and the lady realised that she did not have to do anything and from that day on all the three of them made new stories everyday.

Here is the presentation we used in the session on story doing. We also give a link to the audio recording of the session below.

Hi All
Few things as a reflection for me as faculty

  1. Why only make children sit and tell/do the story? How else you can tell the story? (stand, all sit in one magic carpet, move from one place to another place)
  2. What all you can do to be part of the group while telling/doing story. (move around, eye contact)

Today when I designed "provocation" and was sitting in one place - just changing my seat, changing my body placement (standing, moving) etc could have made your life easier.

Well we give to REAL class experience

  1. Anyone who is interested in DOING story with KHOJ children ? You can do this on Monday 17th Aug.
  2. Constraint to bring to your creativity  - Do any story WITHOUT PROPS - only using MI - discuss with me your plan of story on Thursday if interested.
  3. Strictly any labeling of naughty, mischievous, bad/good, hyper active, too talkative, shy are PROHIBITED (I am serious) when you are with kids in Geniekids.

sharing some expereinces

Submitted by ratnesh on Wed, 12 Aug 2009.

once when doing a story of a journey on boat (with 3-4yrs) - I made a
boat of duppattas and all of us sat in the boat - with me in front as
the boatman and all children in one row behind me and then i told them
the story (realise they could not see my face) - but my actions....

once in a story the boy goes from home to school to playground
so we had three corners in the room classroom representing - home /
school / playground
so whenever the story was in a particular place - we would go there and do the story

once we had a story of frogs - so we made a pond (of blue mat) and all
of us sat in different places in the pond - as frogs and kept on
hopping inside the pond as the story progressed - all of squatting the
whole of story...

once we were doing the story of two friends who were fighting - so we
divided the room and called the left part as friend1 and right as
freind2 - like a badminton court - so every time friend1 said something -
all of us will run to the right side to hear what he was saying (as
friend2) and then when friend2 spoke - we all ran to left side ......

i can go on - but hopefully you get the idea
